A house
shaped by light.

The concept

Light defines the house. Every wall, opening and threshold was placed to receive it — and to let it leave again, slowly.

I — Morning

The first light enters low, across the stone. It finds the bench before it finds you.

II — Afternoon

By afternoon the birches have turned gold, and the kitchen holds the warmth of the whole day.

III — Dusk

At dusk the house turns inside out. It becomes the light in the forest.

IV — Night

One lamp. The pines against the stars. Nothing else is asked of the evening.

Architecture

Oak, stone and the space between.

A single low volume in board-marked concrete and untreated oak, set into the granite of the hillside. Glass is used only where the landscape asks for it. Everywhere else, the walls hold still.

The windows are not views. They are frames — each one cut to hold a single tree, a ridge line, a strip of water.

Eleven hectares of pine and granite surround the house. In winter the snow doubles the light; in June it never quite leaves.
